    The power jack is one of the most common failure items on a laptop; most laptops will probably require at least one power jack repair in during their useful life. Sometimes the jack only needs to be resoldered but replacement is frequently required. Laptop jacks are usually too weak to stand up to the stresses of moving the laptop while the power cord is connected.

    Symptoms of a Bad DC Power Jack

    How Laptop Jacks Break
  • Some power jacks fail under normal operation of your computer. After a year or two of usage, parts just 'come loose' on certain models.

    What Service Centers May Tell You
    Most service centers don't want to deal with this problem by attempting to repair the DC jack. Many, including the large nationwide stores and the laptop's manufacturer, will either tell you the machine is not repairable or that they will need to replace the motherboard (see below). These quotes usually run from $250 to as much as $800.   • Thoroughly clean the laptop cooling fan and replace the CPU cooling thermal paste.
  • Test all laptop operations.
  • Thoroughly test laptop power supply.

    Motherboard Repair - Flat Rate of $225
    Occasionally the signs and symptoms of a bad laptop power jack are similar to those of a motherboard failure. The motherboard is the central circuit board of your computer. All other components and peripherals plug into it, and the job of the motherboard is to relay information between them all. REPLACING a motherboard can be cost-prohibitive; many laptop owners choose not to invest in a motherboard replacement.
